Customs impounded contraband items worth over N172m in February

Gibson Achonu, Owerri
The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘C’ Owerri has impounded 20 illicit items with a Duty Paid Value of N172, 093, 281.00.
The figure is more than what was recorded in January this year which was worth over N122, 282, 220.00.
This was stated by the Customs Area Comptroller of the Unit, Mohammed Garba, while briefing newsmen in Owerri.
He said that the 20 seizures made had a DPV of N172, 093, 281.00 with underpayments recovered standing at N58, 003, 596.00 with 18 suspects arrested and 25 cases pending in court.
Giving a detailed insight of the seizures made, the CAC stated that his unit impounded 9,705 pieces of footwear worth N18, 038, 160.00, 10 vehicles worth N46, 295, 521.00; and 1,205 bags of 50kg bags of imported rice worth N40, 970, 000.00.
Others were a 1 X 40 feet container comprising of 254 bales of second hand clothing worth N36, 576,000.00, 150 pieces of second hand tyres worth   N960,000.00, one container load of timber worth N2, 940, 000.00, as well as 800 and a 1 X 20feet container with 842 cartons of machete worth N27, 153, 600.00.
The Customs boss vehemently regretted that smugglers and their partners in crime have stubbornly refused to purge themselves of the obnoxious business resulting in huge loss of revenue to the Federal Government, despite government stiff penalties against culprits.
He further stated that the NCS being better equipped, mobilised and motivated more than ever before would continue to beam her search light on smugglers, their collaborators and their agents until the battle against smuggling was won.
Mohammed however, appreciated the continued co-operation and supports of some members of the public and other sister agencies that had patriotically assisted the NCS with useful information bordering on smuggling and enjoined them to sustain the spirit in the interest of nation and her economy.
